The United States has announced its intention to withdraw from several international organisations, a move that reflects heightened tensions between Washington and multilateral institutions, U.S. officials said on Tuesday.

In a statement, the White House said the decision was driven by concerns that some organisations have failed to address what the U.S. describes as unfair practices, inefficiencies and biases in global governance. The list of programmes and agencies targeted for withdrawal was not fully detailed, but officials said the move is part of a broader effort to prioritise American interests and reform international systems.

President Donald Trump, addressing reporters, said the United States will continue to engage with global partners on core issues but emphasised that participation in multilateral bodies must align with national priorities. He reiterated that the country would no longer support organisations perceived to be resistant to reform or critical of U.S. policy.

The announcement has drawn a range of reactions from world capitals. Supporters of the decision said it underscores a renewed emphasis on sovereignty and accountability, while critics cautioned that it could weaken international cooperation on pressing global challenges such as health, climate and human rights.

United Nations officials acknowledged the U.S. announcement but said dialogue with Washington remains open, stressing the importance of multilateral engagement in addressing cross-border issues. Analysts said the move may signal a shift in the United States’ approach to global governance and could have implications for diplomatic relations and funding for key international programmes.

The State Department said that details on timelines and specific organisations affected will be released as formal notifications are submitted under relevant international agreements.
