China, Russia and Iran have begun a week‑long series of joint naval exercises in waters off South Africa, military officials said, describing the drills as an effort to enhance maritime cooperation and safety.

The exercises, held under the banner “Exercise Will for Peace 2026,” involve naval units from several BRICS Plus countries and are aimed at enhancing operational coordination and information sharing among participating forces. South African authorities described the drills as focused on maritime security and economic protection.

The expanded group includes nations affiliated with the BRICS Plus initiative, a diplomatic and economic bloc seen by member states as a counterbalance to Western influence in global affairs. Observers have noted that the exercises take place amid broader geopolitical tensions involving major powers.

At the opening ceremony, Chinese military personnel took a leading role, with observers from countries including Brazil, Egypt and Ethiopia attending parts of the exercise. South African officials stressed that the drills are routine and intended to strengthen naval capabilities without signalling hostility.

Critics, however, view the timing of the exercises as significant given current global divisions and competing security partnerships. Some analysts said the participation of Iran and Russia alongside China reflects shifting alignments in defence cooperation.

South Africa regularly conducts naval training with international partners, including the United States, but the current exercise marks a notable engagement with a grouping of countries seeking greater strategic autonomy.
