Later today, 17th January 2026, the Super Eagles will file out against the Pharaohs of Egypt in the AFCON 2025 3rd place match.
This match, which is inherent in the semi-final losses of both teams to Morocco and Senegal, respectively, will be the 10th time both sides will meet at an AFCON tournament and the 20th match of all time. While Egypt lost 0-1 to Senegal in the semi-finals last Wednesday, the Super Eagles lost through a penalty shoot-out to host nation Morocco after a poorly officiated 120 minutes that had many questionable calls from the Ghanaian referee.
In the previous nine AFCON encounters, the Nigerian side won 5 times, while the Pharaohs of Egypt won twice, and both teams drew twice. However, in all twenty matches played, which include friendly matches, the Super Eagles have won eight times, Egypt won six, and both teams have drawn six times.
The Super Eagles, who want to prove who is the better side as far as AFCON 2025 is concerned, will want to win the bronze medals for the ninth time. Already, the eight previous bronze medals stand for Nigeria as the team with the highest bronze medal collection from AFCON, while Egypt has won the bronze medal three times. A victory today will not only extend the Super Eagles’ bronze medal record but will also be a consolation of some sort to a team that had a perfect tournament until last Wednesday’s semi-final match against Morocco. It will also be proof of how the Eric Chelle side can manage a setback and bounce back from disappointment to re-establish themselves as a winning side.
