The European Union has opened a broad investigation into Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot on X after global backlash over its capability to produce sexually explicit images, including those involving children.
The scandal broke late last year when the AI chatbot generated a flood of digitally altered undressed images of women and children in response to user requests.
After a global outcry, X first announced the tool would be limited to paying subscribers but later decided to block all users from using Grok to generate images of real people in revealing clothing.
In a press release, the European Commission announced it will investigate whether the tech platform adequately assessed and addressed risks linked to rolling out Grok’s features on X in the EU.
Henna Virkkunen, the EU’s executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy, stated in a press release that sexual deepfakes involving women and children are a violent and unacceptable form of degradation.
With this investigation, we aim to find out whether X has fulfilled its legal duties or if it has treated the rights of European citizens – including women and children – as mere collateral damage of its service.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
