After an impressive performance that saw the Super Eagles of Nigeria defeat the Foxes of Algeria, also known as the Desert Warriors, the Super Eagles, arguably the best side in the ongoing AFCON 2025, will face the Lions of Morocco, who defeated the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

The Moroccans, against the Nigerian team, will be depending on their home fans and their 38-game unbeaten home record to inspire them against the Super Eagles. They may also be buoyed by Nigeria’s unimpressive record against host nations in previous editions. In 1990, at Algiers, the Super Eagles lost 0–1 to Algeria, who lifted the trophy in front of their home crowd. Of course, many would still remember how the talented Nigerian side lost the final match to a less impressive Ivorian team at the last edition in the Ivory Coast. Nigeria also lost to Tunisia and Ghana in 2004 and 2008, respectively, with both as host nations.

However, if the Lions of Morocco want to hold on to the above, it would be nice to remind them that jinxes can be broken. Moreover, the Nigerian Super Eagles have a remarkable record as the team with the most appearances in AFCON finals. It is to the Super Eagles’ credit that Nigeria is the most decorated team in AFCON history, with 8 bronze, 4 silver, and 3 gold medals. Nigeria, a team that has played in seven AFCON final matches, must be taken seriously, especially in an edition where they have displayed a champion’s mentality in every game. With five straight wins, 14 goals for, and just 4 against, the Moroccans, despite playing in front of their home crowd, will be up against an uphill task. They will need more than a few favourable statistics to motivate them.

Talking about statistics, a look at the head-to-head record between Nigeria and Morocco favours the Super Eagles. The Super Eagles have won against Morocco 5 times, with the Moroccans winning 4 times, and both teams playing to a draw on one occasion.

Definitely, this may just be the final before the final, as this match promises to be thrilling, with both sides bringing in their best from the players to the bench and the coaching crew. The decider may actually come from the technical area. Speaking of the coaching department, the Nigerian side, led by Eric Chelle, has shown that he can be counted on to fashion not just a winning formation, but also one that would leave the opponent destabilised from the first 45 minutes to the last second of 90 minutes. It is this, plus the array of talents, teamwork, sophistication, and current form, that the Super Eagles will employ to reach the finals this weekend while condemning the Atlas Lions of Morocco to the third-place match, where they will contend for the bronze medal.

Go Eagles, go Super Eagles!!!
