The African Union Commission has publicly commended the conduct of Uganda’s recent presidential election and extended its congratulations to President Yoweri Museveni following his victory, the union’s chairperson said.
“H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on January 15, 2026,” the African Union said in a statement on X social network on Saturday.
Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, chair of the African Union Commission, welcomed Museveni’s win in the vote held on January 15, in which the long-serving leader secured a seventh term with more than 71 per cent of the vote. Youssouf also lauded the efforts of the Joint AU/COMESA/IGAD Election Observation Mission, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, for overseeing the process.
In its statement of support, the AU emphasised its commitment to democratic processes and effective governance across the continent, and it urged continued peace and stability in Uganda as political actors and citizens navigate the post-election period.
The commission’s message comes amid ongoing debate within Uganda and among international observers over the election environment, including concerns about internet restrictions and limitations on civic freedoms during the campaign period.
