Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Crash; Two Associates Die
British-Nigerian former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was hospitalised with minor injuries on Monday morning after a deadly car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, authorities and local officials have confirmed. The crash, which occurred near the Makun-Sagamu axis just before midday, claimed the lives of two male occupants of the vehicle and left others injured.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was travelling lost control while attempting an overtaking manoeuvre at excessive speed and collided with a stationary commercial truck parked at the roadside. The incident involved five adult males, of whom two died on the spot, one sustained injuries, and two others, including Joshua, were rescued alive. Preliminary findings show speeding and wrongful overtaking as the main factors behind the crash.
Officials said Joshua, 36, was seated in the rear of the vehicle when the collision occurred. He was promptly evacuated and is currently in stable condition at a medical facility in Lagos, where comprehensive clinical assessments confirmed he does not require emergency intervention. State governments of Ogun and Lagos jointly issued a statement on his condition, noting that doctors will continue to monitor his recovery.

The Ogun State Government also confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been deposited at Livewell Morgue, Sagamu, expressing profound condolences to the families of the victims. Investigations into the crash are ongoing, with the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division notified for documentation and further inquiry.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended his sympathies to Joshua and the bereaved families, describing the tragedy as deeply saddening and urging increased attention to road safety during peak travel periods.
The accident has reignited public conversation on road safety concerns in Nigeria, particularly on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which has seen numerous fatal collisions during the festive season.
