MediaRoom Africa (“we”, “us”, “our”) is an independent digital newsroom focused on Africa, Global News, Technology, Politics, Metro, and Trending. This Editorial Policy explains how we work, what readers should expect, and how we protect editorial integrity.
1) Our Mission
We publish journalism that helps readers understand what is happening, why it matters, and what it could mean next. We aim to be:
- Accurate
- Clear
- Fair
- Human-centered
- Africa-rooted with a global lens
2) Editorial Independence
Our editorial decisions are made independently. Advertising, partnerships, sponsors, or donors (where applicable) do not control:
- what we cover
- how we frame a story
- which facts we include
- our headlines or conclusions
If we publish sponsored content, it is clearly labeled.
3) What We Publish
We publish the following types of content:
- News reporting: fact-based coverage of events and developments
- Explainers: context and background to help readers understand complex issues
- Analysis: informed interpretation based on evidence (clearly labeled as “Analysis”)
- Opinion: viewpoints from columnists or contributors (clearly labeled as “Opinion”)
- Corrections/updates: improvements made when new facts emerge or errors are found
4) Accuracy, Verification, and Sources
We take verification seriously. Our reporting process may include:
- checking facts against credible and/or primary sources (official documents, direct statements, records)
- cross-referencing multiple reputable sources for developing stories
- clearly attributing information (“according to…”, “officials said…”, “documents show…”)
- avoiding speculation presented as fact
Anonymous sources
We may use anonymous sources only when:
- the information is in the public interest, and
- the source faces real risk, and
- we have verified the information as much as possible through other evidence
We do not grant anonymity simply for convenience.
5) Fairness and Harm Reduction
We aim to be fair to the people and communities we cover. We:
- seek relevant responses from individuals/organizations named in serious allegations
- avoid hate speech, harassment, and harmful stereotypes
- take extra care when reporting on minors, victims of violence, and vulnerable groups
- avoid graphic content unless it is essential to public understanding, and we add warnings where appropriate
6) Plagiarism and Attribution
We do not publish plagiarized work.
When we use:
- quotes, data, or documents → we cite and attribute appropriately
- reporting originally broken by another outlet → we credit them clearly and add our own reporting or context
- public domain/Creative Commons media → we provide proper credit when required
7) Corrections and Updates
If we make an error, we correct it promptly and transparently.
How we handle corrections
- Minor edits (typos/grammar) may be corrected without a note.
- Substantive corrections (facts, names, dates, figures, misquotes) will be corrected with a clear update note where appropriate.
To request a correction, contact: info@mediaroomafrica.com
8) Conflicts of Interest
To protect trust:
- Our editors and contributors must avoid covering topics where they have direct financial or personal conflicts.
- Gifts, payments, or favors that could influence coverage are not accepted.
- Any unavoidable potential conflict should be disclosed to editors, and to readers when necessary.
9) Sponsored Content and Advertising
We may publish advertising and sponsored content to fund operations.
Rules:
- Sponsored content is clearly labeled “Sponsored”, “Paid Content”, or “Advertorial”
- Sponsors do not influence editorial coverage
- Affiliate links (if used) are disclosed clearly on relevant pages or within articles
10) Community Guidelines (Comments and Submissions)
If comments are enabled, we may remove content that is:
- hateful, threatening, harassing, or discriminatory
- spam or impersonation
- doxxing or sharing private personal information
- incitement to violence or illegal activity
We may also moderate tips/submissions for safety and legality.
11) Content Removal Requests
We consider removal requests when:
- content contains a proven factual error that cannot be corrected adequately
- content violates privacy in a serious and unjustifiable way
- legal requirements apply
Public-interest reporting is not removed simply because it is uncomfortable.
