Guinea-Bissau’s transitional authorities have prohibited unauthorised press conferences and public statements in an effort to prevent unrest and maintain public order, the government said on Friday.
The announcement came more than six weeks after the military seized power in the West African nation following the ousting of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo. Leaders of the country’s High Military Command said the ban targets political figures and groups that have held unofficial meetings and delivered statements that “jeopardise peace and social cohesion,” according to a statement released by the government.
Transitional authorities said any entity or individual that violates the order will face severe penalties under the nation’s legal framework. Officials framed the policy as necessary to prevent politically motivated violence and maintain stability during the period of military rule.
The development comes amid ongoing political uncertainty in Guinea-Bissau, which has experienced repeated coups and power shifts since gaining independence from Portugal in 1974. Observers say the ban could further restrict political expression during a period of heightened tension.
Guinea-Bissau has experienced repeated political upheavals since its independence, with tensions often spilling into public unrest. Observers say the latest restriction could further limit political expression and press freedom as the country navigates its current transition.
