Nestlé has initiated a recall of a batch of baby formula in Ethiopia after routine quality tests revealed problems with the product, the country’s regulatory authority said on Thursday.

The recall affects the NAN Special Pro HA 0–12 formula, which was manufactured in June 2025 and was scheduled to expire in December 2026. Ethiopia’s Food and Drug Authority said the product had not been properly registered but was permitted for sale in the local market before the discrepancy was identified.

Consumers were advised not to use the affected formula and to return it to the point of purchase for a refund or exchange. The authority stressed that the recall applies only to the specific batch identified and that other baby food products remain safe.

The issue comes as parents and caregivers nationwide rely on infant formula to support child nutrition, particularly in urban areas where breastfeeding may be supplemented with commercial alternatives.

Officials said they were working with Nestlé and distribution partners to ensure the swift removal of the recalled product from store shelves and to prevent further sales.
