Nigeria’s police have foiled an attempted attack on an operational base in Obajana, Kogi State, after armed suspects reportedly tried to overrun the facility, authorities said on Monday.
Police officials said operatives stationed at the base detected suspicious movements in the early hours and engaged the assailants, forcing them to retreat. Several suspects were arrested during the operation, while others fled the scene.
Security sources said weapons and other items were recovered, although details of the seized materials were not immediately disclosed. No casualties were reported among police personnel during the incident.
The attempted attack comes amid heightened security concerns in parts of Kogi State, where authorities have increased patrols and intelligence-led operations to curb criminal activity and protect critical infrastructure.
Police said investigations are ongoing to determine the identity and motive of the attackers, adding that efforts are underway to track down suspects who escaped during the confrontation.
Residents in nearby communities were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could aid ongoing operations. Authorities also reassured the public of their continued commitment to maintaining security across the state.
Kogi State has witnessed periodic security challenges linked to criminal networks exploiting its strategic location between Nigeria’s northern and southern regions. Law enforcement agencies say recent operations have led to arrests and the disruption of several criminal cells.
