At least nine Nigerian soldiers were killed after their military convoy came under attack in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, security sources said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday when an armoured vehicle transporting troops struck an improvised explosive device along a road in Mobbar Local Government Area. Shortly after the explosion, gunmen opened fire on the convoy, according to security officials familiar with the incident.

Several other soldiers were injured during the attack and were evacuated from the area for medical treatment. Local vigilante groups and security forces were deployed to secure the scene and assist with rescue efforts.

The area where the attack took place has long been affected by insurgent activity linked to armed groups operating in Nigeria’s northeast. Military convoys travelling through the region have frequently been targeted despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations.

Nigeria’s armed forces have continued operations against militant groups in Borno State, which has remained the epicentre of a conflict that has displaced millions of people over more than a decade.

At the time of reporting, the Nigerian military had not issued an official statement on the incident.
