Power Cut Reported in El Obeid After Drone Strikes on Infrastructure

El Obeid, capital of Sudan’s North Kordofan state, experienced a significant power outage on Sunday after drone strikes hit the city’s main power station, the national electricity company said.

The attack damaged critical equipment at the facility, triggering a fire that led to a complete halt in electricity supply to the urban area, officials said, underscoring the ongoing instability in parts of Sudan.

The strikes come amid intensified clashes between the Sudanese national army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The RSF has recently escalated operations in the strategically important Kordofan region, which has become a focal point in the country’s protracted conflict.

In response to the violence, army-aligned forces announced they had regained control of several towns south of El Obeid previously held by the RSF. The joint forces, made up of various armed groups aligned with the national army, said they had cleared positions in strategic locations to secure the area.

The fighting has worsened the humanitarian situation in neighbouring communities. Reports indicate that the city of Dilling in South Kordofan is facing severe shortages of food and other essential supplies due to blockades and ongoing hostilities. Government forces have worked to open supply routes to the area to allow aid and civilian movement.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has displaced millions and strained local services across several states, with over a decade of cumulative violence in various regions exacerbating the crisis.
