Sudanese authorities have begun discussions on rebuilding Khartoum, the country’s capital, and restoring essential services after government operations resumed in the city following years of conflict, officials said on Monday.
The Transitional Sovereignty Council and the office of the Prime Minister met in Khartoum to review plans for rehabilitating infrastructure and reviving state institutions. Government representatives noted the importance of restoring basic services and creating conditions for the return of displaced residents who fled the city during intense fighting between the national army and paramilitary forces.
The capital sustained widespread destruction after conflict erupted in April 2023, forcing the government to operate from Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast for more than two years. With security conditions now reported to have improved, officials said preparations are underway to reopen federal offices and address humanitarian needs in the city.
The discussions included plans for cooperation with local communities to accelerate reconstruction efforts. Authorities said the strategy also aims to restore social services and enable displaced families to return and rebuild their lives.
