The New York Mayor announced that Pre-K and 3-K programs are open to all children, no matter their immigration status.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the city’s free Pre-K and 3-K programs are available to all children, regardless of their immigration status.

The mayor made this known during a press briefing on Friday, stressing that neither children nor their parents are required to disclose their immigration status before enrolment.

According to him, every child living in New York is entitled to access early childhood education under the city’s policy.

“These programmes are for every single New Yorker. We do not ask about immigration status,” Mamdani said

Pre-K and 3-K are free early education programmes for four-year-olds and three-year-olds in New York City.

Enrollment for the 2026–2027 academic session is currently open and will run until February 27 through the city’s MySchools website.

Mamdani explained that the policy aligns with long-standing city rules designed to make education accessible to all families, particularly in a city where childcare costs are significantly high.
