Trump renews push for Greenland, says he won’t resort to force
US President Donald Trump is fielding questions following his address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. During his speech, he reaffirmed his push for control of Greenland, while stressing that he would not resort to force — his most explicit assurance yet that military action is off the table in any bid to annex the Arctic island.
Trump also delivered sharp rebukes of Europe while promoting his economic agenda. Meanwhile, European officials are expected to use the forum as a platform for quiet diplomacy aimed at easing Greenland-related tensions that have unsettled the continent and, according to three sources cited by CNN, could now pose a risk to NATO’s cohesion.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said European countries pushing back on the US attempts to acquire Greenland should “sit down and wait” for Trump and “listen to his argument” at the forum.
As President Donald Trump’s speech stretched past the one-hour mark, attention in the packed Davos hall began to wane. While he reflected on the condition of Washington, DC’s grounds after deploying the National Guard, many attendees turned to their phones, stifled yawns, or struggled to stay alert.
A restless few even began gathering their belongings and heading for the exit.Trump may have sensed the shift in the crowd; in the middle of a well-worn attack on Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, he switched gears and started to wrap his speech.“She comes from a country that’s not a country, and she’s telling us how to run America,” he said. “Let me tell you, the explosion of prosperity, in conclusion, and progress that built the West did not come from our tax cuts. It ultimately came from our very special culture.”
