Uganda Imposes Ban on Live Broadcasts of Riots Ahead of General Election

Ugandan authorities have announced a ban on the live broadcasting and streaming of riots, unlawful processions and violent incidents as the country approaches its general election scheduled for later this month.

The directive was issued by the Uganda Communications Commission, which said the restriction applies to television, radio and online platforms. Officials stated that the measure is intended to prevent the escalation of violence, the spread of panic and the circulation of misleading information during the election period.

In a notice to broadcasters, the regulator warned that live coverage of violent scenes could inflame tensions and undermine public order. Media houses were advised to rely on delayed, verified reporting and to comply with existing broadcasting regulations or face possible sanctions.

The decision comes amid heightened political activity as President Yoweri Museveni seeks to extend his decades-long rule in a tightly contested election. Opposition groups and civil society organisations have raised concerns over arrests, restrictions on political gatherings and increased pressure on independent media in the lead-up to the vote.

Government officials have defended the broadcast ban, insisting it is a temporary measure designed to ensure peaceful elections and protect public safety. They urged journalists to exercise caution and professionalism in their coverage.

Media rights advocates have criticised the move, arguing that it could limit press freedom and restrict the public’s access to real-time information during a critical democratic process.

Security agencies have been placed on alert nationwide as authorities say they are prepared to respond to any unrest before, during and after election day.
