UN Raises Alarm Over Reported Drone Strike in Eastern DR Congo
United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has raised concern over reports of a drone strike in the eastern part of the country, warning of possible civilian harm.
In a statement, the UN mission, known as MONUSCO, said it was seeking to verify reports of an incident in Masisi, North Kivu Province, amid ongoing fighting between government forces and armed groups.
The mission condemned attacks affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure and urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law and existing ceasefire agreements.
Medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières said dozens of people were admitted to a local hospital following airstrikes in a residential area, including women and children. Two of the injured later died from their wounds.
Fighting has continued in several parts of eastern DR Congo, where clashes between armed groups and government-aligned militias have displaced thousands of residents and strained humanitarian services.
The UN said diplomatic efforts were ongoing to de-escalate the conflict and prevent further harm to civilians.
