Abiy’s Party Secures Another Landslide Victory in Ethiopia
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party has won another large parliamentary majority after results from the country’s latest general election were announced.
Ethiopia’s National Election Board said the ruling party won 438 seats, comfortably above the 274 seats required for a majority in the House of Peoples’ Representatives.
The result was widely expected, with the Prosperity Party facing a divided opposition and holding strong national influence since Abiy formed it in 2019.
The party campaigned on economic growth, food security and development, with government officials projecting growth of more than 10% in 2026.
Voting did not take place in the northern Tigray region, where political instability has continued after the civil war that ended in 2022.
Polls were also not held in some constituencies in the Amhara region, where clashes between federal forces and the Fano militia have continued.
Abiy’s government also faces armed unrest in Oromia and Amhara, Ethiopia’s two largest regions.
Opposition groups have accused the government of restricting political activity and targeting rival leaders. Authorities deny the allegations.
It was not immediately clear when voting would be completed in areas where the election did not take place.
The Prosperity Party also won a commanding majority in the 2021 election.
