Blue Sharks Hailed After Historic World Cup Run

Thousands of supporters gathered across the streets of Praia on Sunday to welcome home Cape Verde’s national football team after its historic campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Blue Sharks returned to a hero’s reception following their impressive debut at the global tournament, where they exceeded expectations despite losing 3-2 to defending champions Argentina after extra time in the round of 16.

The atmosphere at Praia’s international airport was marked by celebrations as fans waved Cape Verdean flags, beat drums, sang traditional songs and danced while waiting for the players’ arrival from North America. The homecoming coincided with the country’s 51st Independence Day celebrations, making the occasion even more significant for many supporters who turned out in large numbers to honour the team.

Ranked 67th in the FIFA world rankings before the tournament, Cape Verde emerged as one of the competition’s surprise packages by advancing beyond the group stage in their first-ever World Cup appearance. During the tournament, the Blue Sharks earned a goalless draw against European champions Spain and pushed Argentina into extra time before eventually bowing out of the competition.

Goalkeeper Vozinha thanked supporters for standing behind the team throughout the tournament, saying the players had hoped to progress further but were proud of their achievements. Captain Ryan Mendes and defender Pico Lopes spent time greeting fans, signing shirts and posing for photographs outside the airport after the team’s arrival.

Head coach Pedro “Bubista” Brito described the World Cup campaign as a landmark achievement for Cape Verdean football, saying the players had demonstrated that a small island nation could compete against some of the world’s strongest football teams. Many supporters shared that view, describing the team’s performances as a source of national pride and saying the Blue Sharks had earned international respect through their determination and commitment.

While Cape Verde’s journey ended against Argentina, the team’s performances throughout the tournament have been widely recognised as the country’s greatest achievement on the world football stage. No official announcement has yet been made regarding any national honours or further celebrations for the squad.
