The Blue Sharks of Cape Verde, who have given a good account of themselves in their debut FIFA World Cup, have been knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the small island nation from Africa were not disgraced, as they gave the Lionel Messi-led Argentina national team a run for their money.

But for the impressive first-round performance of the Blue Sharks, which included a goalless draw with the Spanish national team, bookmakers would have easily given the day to the South American powerhouse, who doubles as the defending champions. But the Cape Verdians, as they did in the group stages, again proved they were no pushovers, as they dragged the game to 120 minutes, coming back from behind twice.

The Argentinian playmaker, Lionel Messi, opened the scoring for the night with a long ball that passed the impressive Vozinha, in goal for the Africans. This wonder of a goal was Messi’s 20th World Cup goal in six tournaments.

The 29th-minute goal, rather than make the Cape Verdians recoil in defeat, spurred them on until they got the much-needed equaliser in the 59th minute.

Having played out the 90 minutes, checkmating the South Americans and proving they had ambition to win the match, the Blue Sharks conceded a goal in the first minute of extra time.

Again, Cape Verde came back in the 103rd minute before conceding a third and unequalised goal in the 111th minute. Until the final whistle, the Blue Sharks kept pressing forward, thus gloriously exiting the World Cup.
