 Cameroon claims second WAFCON title

Cameroon’s football team celebrates its victory in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final against Malawi.

Cameroon won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, with a 3-0 victory over tournament debutants Malawi in the final at Yaoundé, Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene scored twice in the first half to put Cameroon in control before Alexa Njoya added a third after the break. The victory sparked wild celebrations among the home crowd.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe attended the match. Infantino later helped Motsepe present medals to the top three teams. Algeria beat Morocco 1-0 in the third-place playoff on Saturday.

Monique Ngock was named Player of the Tournament. Infantino and Motsepe also posed for a photo with Ngock and Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o.

The team returned to Yaoundé on Monday afternoon, greeted by hundreds of fans at the international airport and a celebratory parade through the city. Supporters lined the streets as the team bus passed through the capital.

“It validates what a woman can achieve beyond simply watching the children and staying at home,” said fan Arlette Missilisem.

The title is Cameroon’s second WAFCON crown, following their 2016 triumph. Malawi, competing in their first WAFCON final, exceeded all expectations by reaching the decider.
