China expands zero-tariff trade to 53 African nations

China has expanded its zero-tariff trade policy to cover exports from 53 African countries as Beijing strengthens economic ties with the continent, Chinese officials said.

The policy, which took effect on May 1, 2026, removes tariffs on a wide range of African exports entering the Chinese market, including agricultural products and manufactured goods. China is the world’s first major economy to grant unilateral, full-coverage zero-tariff treatment to all African countries with which it has diplomatic ties, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Chinese authorities said the measure was designed to boost trade cooperation and increase market access for African economies. The policy applies to 100% of tariff lines and covers all 53 African nations with diplomatic relations with China.

Trade data from China’s General Administration of Customs shows that trade between China and Africa reached a record $348 billion in 2025, representing a 17.7% increase compared to the previous year. China’s exports to Africa totalled $225 billion, while imports from African countries stood at $123 billion, highlighting the growing economic ties between the two sides.

Economists say the policy could increase export opportunities for African producers, although concerns remain over trade imbalances and infrastructure limitations affecting exports from the continent. In 2025, Africa’s trade deficit with China widened as Chinese exports to Africa grew at a much faster pace than African exports to China.

China remains Africa’s largest bilateral trading partner and has expanded investments across sectors including transport, mining, energy and port infrastructure.
