The Colombia national team at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup has advanced to the round of 16 at the expense of the Black Stars of Ghana, the four-time African champions.
The Black Stars, who conceded in the first half of the 90-minute game, posed no serious threat to the North Americans as they ended the match without a shot on target.
Luis Suarez, the substitute who came in for John Cordoba, who had to leave the pitch due to groin strain, and Marvin Senaya of Ghana, who suffered a hamstring injury in the first 10 minutes of the game, ran down the right and released the ball to Arias to guide the ball past the Ghanaian line of defence and goalkeeper. The 14th-minute goal was enough to secure a spot for the Colombians, who will now face Switzerland in the next round.
Though the West African side came this far, they only scored 2 goals with a total of four shots on goal in the four matches they played, while the Colombian counterparts in the night doubled that in this match.
The closest the Black Stars came was within the 1st 60 seconds as Thomas Partey’s long-range shot went inches past the Colombia goalpost.
The Colombians created lots of chances and would have won with a wider margin had they converted their chances.
