A Ghanaian member of parliament, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Ghana’s Parliament said in a statement.
Frimpong represents the Asante Akyem North constituency. Dutch authorities reportedly held him as part of an investigation linked to the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Sources familiar with the case say the investigation involves suspected financial crimes, including money laundering and romance scams, with an estimated value of up to $32 million. Dutch and US authorities have not officially confirmed these allegations.
Ghana’s Parliament said it was informed of the detention and is working to find out the full details. The statement came from the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror. The Speaker and parliamentary leadership are in contact with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague.
Parliament is seeking clarification on why Frimpong was arrested, whether formal charges have been filed, and the purpose of his visit to the Netherlands.
Officials have not said whether Frimpong was travelling in an official or private capacity.
The case has drawn significant public attention in Ghana. Many are calling for more information from the Dutch and Ghanaian authorities. Parliament says it will provide updates as details emerge.
