Ghana reaches fifth straight World Cup under Queiroz

Carlos Queiroz has become only the second manager to lead teams at five consecutive FIFA World Cups. The 73-year-old will guide Ghana at the 2026 tournament in North America.

Queiroz previously managed Portugal at the 2010 World Cup and Iran at the 2014, 2018 and 2022 tournaments. His fifth successive appearance matches the record set by Serbian coach Bora Milutinović, who led five different national teams between 1986 and 2002.

Queiroz was appointed Ghana’s head coach in April following the dismissal of Otto Addo. The Ghana Football Association turned to the experienced Portuguese manager after a series of disappointing results in international friendlies.

Beyond international football, Queiroz has managed clubs including Real Madrid and served as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. He has also coached national teams in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Brazilian coach Carlos Alberto Parreira holds the overall record for most World Cup appearances by a manager, having led teams at six tournaments, though not consecutively.

Ghana will begin its World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto.
