Kenya LGBTQI+ groups face funding cuts

LGBTQI+ organisations in Kenya are grappling with funding shortages following major cuts to U.S. foreign aid programmes, forcing some groups to scale back services and reduce staff.

Among the affected organisations is the Health Options for Young Men on HIV/AIDS/STIs (HOYMAS), which reported a budget reduction of more than 50%. The funding shortfall has led to layoffs and the suspension of several programmes, including HIV prevention initiatives, counselling services, healthcare worker training and violence reporting support.

Advocates say the cuts have affected services that many members of Kenya’s LGBTQI+ community depend on for healthcare, psychosocial support and protection. Community organisations warn that reduced access to these services could leave vulnerable groups at greater risk of health and social challenges.

Despite the financial strain, some organisations have managed to keep clinics and essential services running with support from government agencies, private donors and community partners. However, sector leaders say the current funding model remains unsustainable.

Rights advocates are now calling for broader and more diversified funding sources, including contributions from local businesses, philanthropic organisations, governments and international partners. They argue that reducing dependence on a single donor would help ensure continuity of critical services during future funding disruptions.

The funding challenges come as civil society organisations across Africa continue to assess the impact of reductions in international aid on healthcare and community support programmes.
