Kenya Unveils Digital ID Reforms for Public Service

The Kenyan government has announced new reforms to its national digital identification system aimed at improving access to public services across the country.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said this updated system will simplify registration processes and improve citizens’ access to healthcare, education, banking and government welfare programmes across the country.

The reforms followed some rapid concerns by civil society organisations over privacy, exclusion and data security issues linked to the previous identification system.

Government officials said this new framework will include stronger legal protections, improved transparency and additional registration centres in rural communities to expand its access.

Technological experts say the move is designed to accelerate Kenya’s digital economy and improve financial inclusion.

The reforms are expected to be introduced in phases over the next few months as consultations continue with the stakeholders.
