Kenyan police arrest ex-chief justice at protest
Kenyan police fired tear gas and arrested former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga during a protest at a national park, escalating tensions over a disputed conservation project.
Mutunga was among activists and community members demonstrating against plans linked to land use and conservation activities in the area. Witnesses said police moved in to disperse protesters after demonstrators attempted to access sections of the park where the protest was being held.
Images shared on social media showed police officers confronting protesters, while activists accused authorities of using excessive force to break up what they described as a peaceful gathering. Several demonstrators were detained during the operation.
Mutunga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice from 2011 to 2016, has remained active in public affairs and civil society campaigns since leaving office. His arrest drew criticism from opposition figures and human rights groups, who called for the protection of the right to peaceful assembly.
The protest centred on concerns raised by environmental campaigners and local communities regarding the management and future use of land within the protected area. Organisers said they wanted authorities to engage affected communities before implementing any major decisions.
Police have not released details of any charges against those arrested during the demonstration.
The government has also not announced whether it will review the concerns raised by protesters over the disputed project.
