Libya deports hundreds of African migrants
Libyan authorities have deported hundreds of African migrants following a renewed operation against irregular migration and human trafficking networks, officials said.
The operation targeted undocumented migrants living in shelters and areas controlled by trafficking groups in western Libya, according to the Department for Combating Illegal Migration. Those deported included migrants from Niger, Chad, Sudan and other African countries.
European governments have pressured Libya to strengthen border controls and reduce migrant crossings into southern Europe.
Human rights groups have raised concerns about conditions in migrant detention centres, citing reports of abuse, overcrowding and poor sanitation. The International Organisation for Migration has called for improved protection for migrants and warned against forced returns without humanitarian support.
Libya remains a main transit route for African migrants attempting dangerous Mediterranean crossings despite ongoing insecurity and political instability.
