Mauritania Backs Stronger Sahel Cooperation
Mauritania has called for closer cooperation among Sahel countries to address growing security and development problems across the region.
The call was made during discussions involving regional leaders and government representatives, where concerns were raised about the impact of armed violence, cross-border crime and economic pressures affecting several countries in the Sahel.
Mauritanian officials said cooperation between neighbouring states remains essential for tackling security threats that often extend beyond national borders. The discussions also focused on trade, infrastructure development and efforts to improve economic opportunities for communities affected by instability.
The Sahel region has witnessed a series of political and security developments in recent years, including military takeovers, armed attacks and humanitarian challenges that have displaced thousands of people. Governments across the region have increasingly sought new security arrangements and partnerships in response to these developments.
Mauritania has maintained diplomatic engagement with both regional and international partners while advocating collective approaches to issues affecting the wider Sahel.
Participants at the meeting discussed areas for future collaboration, including information sharing and joint initiatives to improve regional stability.
No new regional agreement was announced following the discussions.
