Niger Leader Begins Visit to Türkiye

General Abdourahamane Tiani has arrived in Türkiye for an official visit aimed at enhancing the diplomatic, economic and security ties between the two countries.

General Tiani, who heads Niger’s transitional government, is expected to hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the visit. According to Niger’s government, discussions will focus on defence cooperation, trade, investment and infrastructural development.

The visit comes as Niger continues to reshape its foreign relations following the military takeover in July 2023. Since then, the country has reduced collaboration with some Western partners while expanding engagement with countries including Türkiye, Russia and several Middle Eastern nations.

Türkiye has increased its presence across Africa over the past decade through trade agreements, infrastructure projects, defence partnerships and diplomatic development. Turkish companies are also involved in construction, energy and transport projects in several African countries.

The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both governments to review existing areas of cooperation and explore new partnerships.

Neither the Nigerien nor the Turkish government has announced whether any formal agreements or memoranda will be signed during the visit.
