Nigeria has filed charges against six individuals, including a retired army general and a former cabinet minister, in connection with an alleged military coup plot against President Bola Tinubu, local media reported Tuesday.

The charges include treason, terrorism, failure to inform security agencies about the plot, and money laundering linked to terrorism financing.

Listed among the defendants are former minister of state for petroleum resources Timipre Sylva, retired major-general Mohammed Ibrahim Gana, retired navy captain Erasmus Ochegobia Victor, and police inspector Ahmed Ibrahim.

The defendants are due to be arraigned on Wednesday before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The alleged plot emerged in October 2025, when 16 officers were arrested over “issues of indiscipline,” according to local reports. President Tinubu subsequently sacked his military high command and appointed new heads of the army, air force and navy.

Nigeria has seen several military takeovers in its history and spent much of the 20th century under military rule since its independence from Britain in 1960.

It remains unclear whether the six defendants have entered pleas or retained legal representation.
