The Nigerian government has engaged U.S. lobbying firms to help communicate its policies on protecting Christian communities, officials said on Wednesday, amid ongoing concerns about inter-communal violence in the country.

The move follows requests by Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for external support to explain government efforts aimed at ensuring the safety and security of all faith groups, including Christians who have been affected by attacks from armed groups in parts of the country.

Officials said the engagement is intended to strengthen diplomatic outreach and counter narratives that Nigeria’s policies favour one group over another. The lobbyists will work with relevant ministries to clarify policy priorities before international audiences, including foreign governments and multilateral institutions.

Nigeria has faced persistent violence in several states, where clashes between herders and farmers, banditry, and extremist attacks have often had religious overtones. Leaders in Abuja have repeatedly emphasised that their security strategy is focused on protecting all citizens regardless of faith.

Some civil society organisations welcomed the decision, saying it could help improve understanding of Nigeria’s security context internationally. Others expressed concerns about the use of foreign lobbyists to shape the country’s image, urging greater focus on tangible improvements in security on the ground.

The cost of the contracts and the names of the firms involved were not immediately disclosed, and government sources said details would be released once formal agreements are finalised.
