Nigeria Super Falcons Get New Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of former Super Eagles defender and Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, as the interim Coach of the Female national team, Super Falcons.

The former Super Eagles captain and member of the NFF Technical Committee, Augustine Eguavoen, will be in charge of the Super Falcons as they battle Comoros this October, in an attempt to book a place in the 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen is an interim replacement for Coach Justin Madugu, who was relieved last August following the Super Falcons’ quarter-finals exit at the 2026 WAFCON, a situation which was further compounded by the loss to Bayana Bayana of South Africa, thus nailing any hope of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

The disastrous WAFCON outing and World Cup African play-off ensured an unenviable record of missing out on the Female World Cup for the first time, a history that has diminished Madugu’s record of leading the Super Falcons to their tenth WAFCON title just a year earlier.

Augustine Eguavoen will be assisted in this new role by Nasarawa Amazons head coach, Christopher Danjuma, former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf, who had 68 caps for the Super Falcons, and former goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa.

Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition.

After Nigeria has defeated Comoros, they will face the winner between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Morocco in the third round, from February to March 2027.

The fourth round is scheduled for October 2027, while the final rounds are slated for November to December 2027.
