The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has said the electoral body anticipates the number of potential voters for the 2027 General elections to hit 100 million before the elections.

This disclosure was made by the Chairman of the electoral body, the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Haruna, who also noted that, following the increased figure, INEC would need about 1.4 million ad hoc staff deployed across the more than 176,000 polling units across the country.

Haruna, who spoke in Abuja on Tuesday, 19th August 2026, at the INEC joint implementation meeting of the Departments of Voter Education and Publicity (VEP) and Gender Inclusivity (G&I), stated that the current voters register stood at more than 93 million, and said the register was expected to cross 100 million as the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise is concluded across the country.

This development would consolidate Nigerian position as the largest electoral democracy in Africa. According to Haruna, the meeting was held to ensure communication and an inclusivity roadmap that would also help in ensuring a peaceful, credible, and inclusive 2027 general election in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the 2027 presidential elections, most of the presidential candidates, including Peter Obi of the NDC yesterday, signed the peace accord to ensure a peaceful election. However, the incumbent president and APC presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was absent from the event, as was the former president and presidential candidate of the ADC, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
