RSA Police Deputy Chief Resigns Amid Allegations
South Africa’s suspended deputy police chief, Shadrack Sibiya, has resigned amid allegations of corruption and sexual offences, police authorities have said.
Sibiya was scheduled to appear at a disciplinary hearing on Monday, but his lawyers submitted his resignation letter at the start of the proceedings, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said.
Mathe said his departure would be treated as a dishonourable discharge because disciplinary proceedings were ongoing at the time of his resignation.
Sibiya is currently in prison after being arrested last month over allegations of rape and grooming a minor. He has denied the charges, while his bail application has been postponed until October 13.
He has also been implicated in a judicial commission of inquiry investigating allegations of corruption within the South African police and links between officers and criminal networks.
The commission, chaired by retired Judge Mbuyiseni Madlanga, has heard allegations that Sibiya received large sums of money and gifts from suspected criminals. He denied the allegations during his testimony.
Sibiya had been suspended from his position since September last year.
