Senegal Launches Crackdown on Illegal Fishing

Senegalese authorities have launched a new crackdown on illegal fishing activities along the nation’s coastline following complaints from local fishing communities over declining fish supplies.

The Ministry of Fisheries said security patrols had been increased in coastal areas to monitor unauthorised fishing vessels operating in Senegalese waters.

Officials said several boats suspected of violating fishing regulations and standards were intercepted during recent operations carried out by naval authorities.

Local fishermen accused foreign industrial trawlers of damaging fishing zones and affecting the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on small-scale fishing activities.

The government said the operation forms part of broader efforts to protect marine resources and strengthen food security in the country.

Environmental organisations have repeatedly warned that illegal and unstandardized fishing continues to threaten marine ecosystems and local economies across West Africa.

Senegal’s fishing sector remains one of the country’s major sources of employment and export revenue.
