Somalia Security Institute Graduates First Cohort
More than 500 students have graduated from Somalia’s Institute of Security and Strategic Studies, marking the institution’s first graduating cohort and a milestone in efforts to strengthen the security sector in the country.
The graduates completed three programmes at the institute, which operates under Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA). President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud attended the graduation ceremony on Wednesday and urged the graduates to apply their academic and professional training to strengthen national security, stability, and state institutions.
Mohamud said security agencies require personnel with strong knowledge, professional competence, and operational skills. He described investment in human capital as an important part of building effective national security institutions and praised reforms at the institute, including improvements to its curriculum, academic standards, and professional training programmes.
The graduation comes as Somalia continues to face security threats, particularly from al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked armed group responsible for attacks against government forces, security personnel, and civilians.
Established in 2019, the institute was created to improve the knowledge and capabilities of personnel working within Somalia’s security institutions. Its programmes cover national security, strategic planning, intelligence, conflict, risk assessment, security governance, and institutional resilience.
The first graduating cohort adds personnel trained in security operations and the analytical and strategic aspects of national security.
