South Africa loses to Mexico in World Cup opener
South Africa lost 2-0 to co‑hosts Mexico in their 2026 FIFA World Cup opening match at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday.
Mexico took the lead in the 9th minute. Forward Julián Quiñones scored after a defensive error by South Africa. The hosts added a second goal in the 67th minute when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez headed in a cross from Roberto Alvarado.
The match had three red cards. South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole was sent off in the 50th minute. Teammate Themba Zwane received a straight red card later in the match. Mexico defender César Montes was also dismissed in stoppage time.
South Africa created several scoring chances during the game but did not convert. According to post‑match statistics, Mexico had 58% possession and attempted 15 shots, with five on target. South Africa had 42% possession and eight shots, two on target.
South Africa has two remaining group stage matches. They will face the Czech Republic in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 18, followed by South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico, on June 24. Mexico leads Group A after the opening round of matches with three points.e opening round of matches with three points.
The match was played before a crowd of 87,000 at the Estadio Azteca, which hosted the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals.
