South Africa Marks 50 Years Since Soweto Uprising

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched the Milestones of Freedom Campaign, a national initiative commemorating key events that shaped the country’s struggle for democracy and the fight against apartheid.

The campaign was unveiled in Tshwane as South Africa marks the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising, one of the most significant moments in the anti-apartheid movement. The protests began when thousands of black students took to the streets to oppose the apartheid government’s education policies. The demonstrations were met with a violent police crackdown that left hundreds dead and injured, drawing global attention to the injustices of apartheid.

The Milestones of Freedom Campaign, themed “Honouring the Past, Delivering the Future,” will also commemorate other landmark events in South Africa’s history. These include the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the country’s Constitution, the 70th anniversary of the anti-pass campaign, and the 60th anniversary of the forced removals from District Six.

According to the presidency, the initiative aims to promote national unity, social cohesion and renewed commitment to democratic values. Government officials say the campaign will encourage reflection on the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle while highlighting the importance of addressing contemporary social and economic challenges.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said the commemorations serve as a reminder of South Africa’s journey from apartheid to democracy and underscore the need to continue building a more inclusive society. He added that the campaign reflects the government’s commitment to improving service delivery and strengthening democratic institutions.

Leaders from government, business, civil society and youth organisations are expected to participate in activities linked to the campaign, which will run through several major historical anniversaries over the coming months.
