Sudan Army Shoots Down RSF Drones

Sudan’s army shot down drones belonging to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Thursday after explosions were heard over the capital, Khartoum.

The source said air defences intercepted all of the RSF drones that attempted to target areas in northern Omdurman, where a large military zone is located near Khartoum. None of the drones reached their intended targets, the source said.

An AFP correspondent in Khartoum heard anti-aircraft fire followed by five explosions early Thursday morning.

The RSF also targeted Khartoum with drones on two consecutive days last month, with the army saying it intercepted the attacks.

The latest incident comes as Sudan’s war between the army and the RSF continues into its third year. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has killed tens of thousands of people and triggered major hunger and displacement crises.

Despite the continued attacks, Khartoum has experienced a gradual return to normal life in recent months. About 2.3 million displaced people have returned to the capital, while reconstruction efforts have begun and market activity has resumed.

The military source did not provide details on the number or type of drones involved in Thursday’s attack.
