Sudan Lifts Curfew And State Of Emergency

Sudan has lifted a two-year-old curfew and a state of emergency in Khartoum, allowing residents to move and work around the clock, the government’s Security Affairs Coordination Committee announced on Thursday.

The committee said the state of emergency, imposed in 2024 amid worsening security conditions, had been lifted following a meeting chaired by Khartoum Governor Ahmed Othman Hamza.

However, security checkpoints and army patrols will remain in place across the capital. Residents travelling at night were also urged to carry identification documents.

The committee also restricted the entry of foreign nationals into Khartoum State, except those holding valid visas or permits. The restriction applies to public and private transport, including trains and buses, with drivers and transport companies warned of penalties for violations.

The curfew, introduced in May 2024, had restricted the movement of people and vehicles between 11pm and 5am, while commercial traffic and pedestrian movement were prohibited from 10pm to 5am.

Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 13 million others, according to UN and international estimates.
