Sudan repatriates 350 citizens from Egypt

Some 350 Sudanese nationals have voluntarily returned home from Egypt as repatriation efforts continue amid signs of improved access to parts of Sudan despite ongoing conflict. The latest group departed Alexandria on Sunday, August 2, aboard seven buses under a programme coordinated by the Al Amal Committee for Voluntary Return, a community-led humanitarian initiative. The buses crossed into Sudan via the Wadi Halfa border crossing. Sudan’s Consul General in Alexandria, Abdel-Dayem Ali Al Bashir, said the operation would continue until every Sudanese citizen wishing to return home had the opportunity to do so. The committee’s representative in Alexandria, Ismat Ahmed Saeed, praised the Sudanese consulate for supporting the initiative and expressed hope that the partnership would continue as additional return trips are organised. The latest movement brings the number of Sudanese who have voluntarily returned from Egypt over the past month to nearly 5,500. Sudanese authorities previously disclosed that more than 428,000 citizens had returned from Egypt by the end of 2025 under similar voluntary repatriation efforts. Since fighting broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), more than 1.2 million Sudanese have fled to Egypt. An estimated five million Sudanese were already living in the country before the conflict, making Egypt one of the largest destinations for people escaping the violence. The war has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced about 13 million others and triggered one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions still requiring urgent assistance both inside Sudan and across neighbouring countries.
