Tanzania Faces Criticism over Internet Restrictions
Tanzania is facing growing criticism from digital rights groups and international organisations over internet restrictions and arrests linked to political activities ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Rights organisations said access to X, formerly Twitter, had been restricted in parts of the country following the arrest and deportation of activists who travelled to Tanzania to monitor the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
The government has not officially confirmed responsibility for the restrictions, but digital rights groups said the disruptions and restrictions affected access to information and online interactions.
Authorities previously arrested Lissu on charges including treason and publishing false information. Supporters of the opposition leader have denied the allegations against him.
Human rights organisations also criticised the arrest of opposition supporters and activists ahead of planned political demonstrations.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has defended its security measures, saying authorities are working to maintain stability and public orderliness.
The issue has drawn international attention as Tanzania prepares for future political activities and electoral processes.
