Tanzania Launches Major Port Expansion
Tanzania has begun a major expansion of port facilities in Dar es Salaam as part of efforts to strengthen its trade and improve cargo handling capacity.
The project includes the construction of new berths, upgraded cargo terminals and modern equipment designed to reduce congestion at one of East Africa’s busiest ports.
Transport officials said the expansion would improve the movement of goods within Tanzania and neighbouring countries that rely on the port for importation and exportation.
Dar es Salaam serves as a key gateway for trade across the region, including cargo destined for Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Authorities said the upgraded facilities would allow larger vessels to dock and help reduce delays that have affected shipping operations in recent years.
Business groups welcomed the development, saying improved port efficiency could lower transport costs and support regional trade.
The government expects the project to increase revenue from maritime activities while strengthening Tanzania’s standing as a logistics hub in East Africa.
