Tanzania President Accepts VP’s Resignation

The President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has accepted the resignation of Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi, the presidency said on Tuesday.

Nchimbi submitted his resignation on August 25, requesting that it take effect on September 4, 2026.

The Directorate of Presidential Communications said Hassan had accepted the request, without giving further details about the reasons for the resignation.

Nchimbi had earlier said he was stepping down to respect the president’s wishes, citing a prior commitment to resign if Hassan wanted someone else to serve as vice president.

He said he was “convinced beyond doubt” that the president wanted a change in the position.

The presidency said constitutional procedures would now be followed to appoint a new vice president.

The resignation comes amid heightened political attention in Tanzania, where opposition leader Tundu Lissu is currently facing a treason trial after being detained in April 2025.

The government has also faced scrutiny over deadly unrest surrounding the country’s 2025 elections.

Nchimbi’s resignation takes effect just days before the start of September, when the process of replacing him is expected to begin.
