Tanzania swears in new Vice-President Ndejembi

Deogratius Ndejembi has been sworn in as Tanzania’s vice-president, replacing Emmanuel Nchimbi, who resigned earlier this week.

The 43-year-old former energy minister took the oath of office on Saturday at the State House in Dodoma. His appointment followed nomination by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and unanimous parliamentary approval on Friday.

At the swearing-in ceremony, President Samia Suluhu Hassan told her new deputy he would need to grow into the job quickly despite his age. “Let me take this opportunity to offer my sympathies, Honorable Ndejembi. We have placed a heavy responsibility on your shoulders at a young age without prior consultation; I am truly sorry about that,” she said.

The president described the appointment as part of the push of her government to bring young people into leadership roles. She urged Ndejembi to serve all Tanzanians without discrimination. “The position is a trust bestowed upon you by Tanzanians, through the CCM party and the Parliament of Tanzania. Therefore, go and serve them without discrimination,” Samia said.

The new VP pledged loyalty to the president and promised to serve all citizens regardless of their political affiliations.

Ndejembi, who holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from the University of Dar es Salaam, has been a member of parliament since 2015. He served as Energy Minister from March 2025 until his elevation to the vice-presidency.

His predecessor, Nchimbi, resigned on Tuesday. The CCM party later expelled him, citing indiscipline.
