Ten People Convicted in France Over Online Harassment of First Lady Brigitte Macron

French authorities have convicted ten individuals for their roles in a coordinated online harassment campaign targeting Brigitte Macron, the country’s first lady, marking a notable enforcement action against abuse directed at high-profile public figures, prosecutors said on Monday.

The convictions stem from a prolonged harassment campaign on social media platforms that included repeated threats, defamatory posts and coordinated attacks aimed at Ms Macron. French prosecutors characterised the conduct as part of a broader pattern of “digital hatred” and illegal intimidation, emphasising the harmful impact of such behaviour on public life and democratic engagement.

According to court documents, the defendants were found guilty of aggravated insult, public insult, and harassment through digital communication, offences that carry significant penalties under French law. Judges cited clear evidence of online posts and messaging that singled out Ms Macron in ways prosecutors said crossed legal boundaries.

Authorities have said that the convictions should serve as a deterrent in a wider effort to curb the misuse of digital platforms to target public figures and marginalised groups. France has also intensified its legal framework to address online hate speech and abusive behaviour in recent years, reflecting growing concerns over social media’s role in amplifying harmful content.

The verdicts come amid ongoing debates in Europe and beyond about balancing free speech rights with protections against harassment and threats on digital platforms. Legal experts said the rulings underscore France’s commitment to enforcing existing laws while prompting broader discussions about regulatory measures on social media.
