Tinubu skips UNGA, Shettima leads delegation

President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, directing Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation.

In a statement on Sunday, Stanley Nkwocha, spokesman to the Vice President, said Tinubu had mandated Shettima to lead the delegation. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him and lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly,” the statement read.

Shettima will lead a high-level delegation comprising Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State, ministers and other senior government officials.

The 81st UNGA General Debate will be held from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement and participate in high-level meetings on the Right to Development, climate action, and other strategic issues.

Tinubu has been on a three-week vacation in Europe since August 30. His first stop was London, before proceeding to Paris.

This is Tinubu’s third consecutive UNGA absence since assuming office in 2023. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has demanded an explanation, describing the pattern as requiring “an honest explanation.”

A presidential aide said Tinubu’s absence would not affect Nigeria’s international role, noting the President is focusing on domestic issues including the economy and security.
